ATN3600 etc HyperElliptical Upgrade for audio-technica AT3600 AT91R Cartridges and More

You can now select the highly prized Hyperelliptical cut diamond tip for this body style. Hyperelliptical is the absolute best hi-end value choice you can get. In many cases the cartridge for this needle is built in to the tonearm so this is the only way to go high end without having to replace the entire turntable. The Hyperelliptical cut will bring out details you've never been able to hear on the record with the standard cartridge that it fits.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
TRACKING PRESET OPTION:
Most turntables can handle the normal tracking pressure of 1.25 - 2.5 grams that this needle likes, however
the high tracking pressure option above (over 3 grams) is now reluctantly available by popular demand for customers who, after carefully reviewing the CAUTIONS below regarding entry-level turntables, still wish to "supe up" their entry-level turntable with a hi-end needle. For $5 we adjust your needle to handle the higher tracking forces of factory preset tonearms with a built-in cartridge. This prevents the needle from "bottoming out" on the record surface from the usually 3-4 grams tracking pressure of a typical entry-level tonearm. We don't recommend this activity but it is possible to achieve surprisingly good results in most cases. It's kind of like over clocking a computer. It can be done with success but you are running closer to the edge. caveat emptor!
Entry-level turntable: If you paid under $99, the tonearm is straight and has no readily visible adjustment points, screws or wiring, you likely have an entry-level turntable.

CAUTION
Because the precise cut of a hyperelliptical tip requires precise alignment and lower tracking forces, we generally discourage using hyperelliptical needles on low-end turntables. Any turntable that is factory preset in its alignment and tracking pressure and has a built-in cartridge similar to the above picture (with or without the circled black plastic bottom corner) is considered "entry-level". We cannot warranty hyperelliptical needles damaged from use in a 'low-end' turntable.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the aftermarket 'flip-guard HyperElliptical upgrade' of the most popular needle in existence, the "211". Almost all other 211 type needles ever made are "entry-level" conical tipped. We have custom ordered this special HyperElliptical upgrade from our highly trusted source in Japan. This will be a dramatic upgrade from your old needle and is only recommend for those wanting the best possible sound without a lot of hassle upgrading various components of their stereo system. The needle is where the rubber meets the road. As such it is arguably the most critical component of a stereo system required in order to reproduce Excellent sound.

If you think you have a match to this one, you are very likely correct! Note, however that even though the shape of the plastic housing is very slightly different at the rear than the other 211 type needles, it's fit and function is exactly the same in almost all turntables which use the "3600" family of cartridges (see below), however,

•

CAUTION: Some entry-level turntables, have a built-in cartridge that also has a plastic headshell encasement (shown above) which has 'extra' plastic (circled above) that will not allow the use of this needle due to the slope of extra plastic that this needle's holder has in this area. If this issue applies to your turntable, please email us your model number and note that the little corner of black plastic (circled above) can be trimmed, at your discretion, to allow the upgrade to this needle.

Hyperelliptical Needle
I'm using this needle on a Sony usb turntable to convert vinyl lp's to mp3 format. The sound is remarkbly excellent. Would highly reccomend replacing factory original with this needle.

Performance Boost
At first, this seems like an expensive stylus upgrade. However, the AT3600 cartridge has been around a long time and for good reason. Ditching the clunky Conical stylus for this HyperElliptical (line contact) version will show immediate improvements in the areas of Tracing smoothness and tracking performance. a MUST for anyone that cares about fidelity!!!

Serious Hi Fi upgrade, make sure it suits you.
After the Elliptic upgrade we just wanted a long lasting stylus, to my surprise this pick up was able to clear out seriously bad mastered albums, apart from being stellar reading inner disc songs. Be aware it is not perfect, treble is higher here and that has made my 70's collection a 3D show but I have returned to the green one for some other "bright" more modern music. It picks up more surface noise but on the good side it seems to literally extract dirt from old Albums. I have a Sony PSHX500 and I believe I have reached its pick performance with this. It is definitely the way to go for medium range turntables based upon the AT3600 family. Just make sure you have a conical or elliptic stylus in hand because it doesn't suit everything.

Awesome stylus!
The ATN95EX is blindingly good value, but it was blown away by both the 3600 and the 110, and I mean blown away! I wasn't quite so surprised at the Nagaoka's quality, but the 3600 (bearing in mind it costs a mere £11) equipped with the hyper-elliptical stylus amazed me! So it was now 3600 vs 110, and again I was amazed at how little there was in it! Which I guess makes sense since with the stylus upgrade the 3600 now cost around £100, about the same cost of the 110. Both stylie had their fortés, neither had any faults.  The 3600 is an excellent tra ker at very low weights (mine is set at 1.6g). This combined with the fact that the stylus sits so low and so deep in the groove is most useful for playing the copious quantities of charity shop records that my partner likes to buy, whose condition can be very hit and miss! I even saw that stylus chip its way through what looked like nail polish remover spilt on the grooves! Next time I played it, it sounded perfect. The 110 on the other hand, being a .4 by .6 and trackable at 2g, will quite merrily jump grooves on a poor quality record. Round 1 winner for tracking - 3600. But how do they sound? The 110 is noticably more sibilant, but I have read that this calms down with use. However I cannot fault the warm sound of the 110 and its excellent separation; but I stress it is only slightly better than the 3600, say a 10 vs a 9. Winner round 2 - sound - 110 (but only by a whisker!). I will step out on a limb here and boldly state that if your music was recorded pre-mid 70s, I doubt you'd hear any difference in sound quality between these two carts/stylie; but for modern recordings on a good quality disk I'd pop the 110 in, eapecially for rock music. However, the 110 is not an "all-rounder" like the 3600 is, and for approx £90, if your turntable already has a 3600 fitted, I'd say definitely go for this Bliss hyper- elliptial stylus as an upgrade; it is superb value for money, a superb tracker, can hold its own with a 110 (no less!) and sounds fabulous. Thank you Turntable Needles and thank you Bliss for such a fabulous product!

Awesome stylus!
My Lenco 400bk direct drive budget turntable came fitted with an AT3600 cartridge with a standard conical stylus. I stumbled across this website and thought I'd chance my arm on the hyper-elliptical stylus. I also had an AT95 cart with an ATN95EX stylus & a Nagaoka MP110, so I had myself a Singapore Ian style shoot-out; here's what happened: The ATN95EX is blindingly good value, but it was blown away by both the 3600 and the 110! Hyperelliptical is very good
The 200-DHE hypereliptical is a big improvement over the 211-DENG. The eliptical is "good enough." The DHE is very good indeed. My old ears can hear the difference immediately. Better for 45s, too. I'm not sure the shibata is noticeably better, but it's been a while since I listened to it. The other big difference in what a record sounds like is how clean it is. Hyper or regular elliptical play back the crud.
