• NOTE: Because this needle is designed for use specifically with Ortofon cartridges, it can be found in numerous brands of turntables. In some cases the cartridges for this needle may be original equipment supplied with a new turntable, but was more likely selected at time of sale to complete a turntable sold without a cartridge or later as an upgrade to the original cartridge supplied by the turntable manufacturer. This needle should be matched primarily to the cartridge type not necessarily the turntable.

Ortofon has been designing and manufacturing magnetic cartridges for many years. At the heart of our magnetic models is Ortofon’s patented Variable Magnetic Shunt (VMS) generating system.

The VMS principle

Compared to the conventional moving magnet systems, VMS offers reduced effective tip mass (moving mass) for better transient response, lower distortion and improved sonic depth and clarity.

A conventional magnetic cartridge normally uses a solid magnet, either permanent or induced moving close to a set of coils. In Ortofon’s patented Variable Magnetic Shunt (VMS) design, the stylus cantilever is attached to a very light tubular armature which moves between the coils in the field of a miniature ring magnet.
