This is a Genuine Audio technica AT-3230 needle assembly (complete, includes moving coils and black plastic socket housing) Moving coil cartridges provide SUPERior musical smoothness. Since the needle assembly comes with a new set of coils you are, in a sense buying a whole new cartridge. That is why this needle costs more. The receptacle that the needle plugs into is basically just the housing for the permanent magnets.
