ORTOFON 2M Red Phono Cartridge

As always, 100% genuine Ortofon.  Packaging may vary.

from http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue39/ortofon2m.htm :
"The 2M series is available in four different iterations, which are divided into two tiers. The 2M Red ($99) and Blue ($199) share the same plastic cartridge body and engine, but where the Red uses a standard ellipitical stylus, the Blue employs a polished, nude ellipitcal diamond. The second tier is comprised of the Bronze ($389) and Black ($669), which share an advanced Noryl/glass composite body and a more sophisticated engine. The Bronze sports a nude fine-line diamond, while the Black has a top-of-the-line Shibata profile. Both the Bronze and Black also use silver-plated wire internally instead of copper. Styli are interchangeable within both tiers, so the buyer of a Red can cost-effectively upgrade to Blue for only the price of the stylus unit. Ditto with the Bronze and Black."

From Ortofon:

The Orotofon 2M logoThe 2M series were developed in conjunction with Danish designer Moller Jensen Design, the same designer who designed the award winning MC Jubilee and Kontrapunkt series. Inspired by the facets of a diamond, whose contours gracefully trace the grooves on a record's surface, the 2M's handsome elegance establishes a great combination of form and functionality.

2M cartridges are designed for precise and accurate retrieval of the information in the record groove. Our philosophy is to play the record sound as accurate as possible, without coloring the sound. We have optimized the design for ease of mounting the cartridge, weight and size to fit the most common turntables at the market today.

The name 2M was selected among several ideas. We wanted a modern name which should be easy to pronounce and to remember, and therefore an alpha numerical name was chosen. 2M means MM, which is the abbreviation for moving magnet.

Of course the 2M isn't just another pretty face. It has been engineered to the highest standards and is congruent with Ortofon's unrelenting commitment to providing the most precise and accurate reproduction possible without coloration.

The 2M series of cartridges feature Ortofon's trademark split pole pins, an invention which enables moving magnet cartridges to have a flat frequency response, as with a moving coil cartridge. Split pole pins were invented by Ortofon, and were originally presented in the 500 series and Super OM series. The 2M Red uses an improved engine, which provides an increased output of 5.5mV. 2M red features a tipped elliptical diamond.

Smooth with plenty of punch. Best one for the price
Pros.. smooth and neutral sounding treble, plenty of punch with rock songs that have lots of drums, it has lots of bass, easy installation since there are no nuts. In my opinion it's the best cartridge for the price. Probably one of the best values in cartridges. Sure there are better ones but not for this price range. Not as detailed as Audio Technica AT120eb or ortofon OM20 but better than the Shure m97xe. In my opinion. Tracking and inner groove distortion are quite good. My turn table is a Technics SL-D3 and using the Technics plastic overhang 52mm gauge. You can't go wrong for a $100 cartridge.

Ortofon Red Cartridge
This cartridge replaced a Stanton Discmaster II on a T.50 turntable. Best use of money I ever spent on audio gear. It may cost me more money in the near future by creating desire to upgrade the turntable. The Ortofon description rings true--it sounds accurate and even. Steely Dan records really shine.

Great Cartridge
Very nice sounding cartridge. Very smooth, warm sound with good separation and definition. Highly recommend it. It was very easy to install with the integral threads. No little nuts to try to hold on to. Another plus is it's a very good looking cartridge.

Ortofon 2M Red
When compared with other Ortofon cartridges, the 2M Red performs like an Ortofon, it is precise and tight with a dynamic presentation, it does seem brighter than some of the OM models. I really enjoy listening to this cartridge and if it is being considered I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Easy install and clear tone
I was pleased with the nut-less mounting of this cartridge, in contrast to my previous Grado cartridge which requires nuts and makes the install more tedious. Also, I was unhappy with the mushy-ness I was getting out of my Grado Red; a little too warm for my ear. This cartridge is much livelier and bright. Glad I swapped out the Grado for this. Great deal.

Great upgrade
Easy install. Sounds full and clear, great tracking, robust construction. Changing the stylus will be a breeze. Great upgrade for my HK with Microrace tonearm. Very satisfied.

Ortophon 2M Red
I couldn’t be happier with this cartridge. Now that my Zero100SB is restored I don’t think it ever sounded so good. My son was right too-vinyl does indeed sound better. It’s hard to imagine how a Blue or better cart could sound any better
