Ortofon Stylus Tracking Force Gauge

The Ortofon tracking force gauge is a simple budget tool for turntables that is used to determine the stylus tracking force.

The tracking force is the downward pressure that is applied by the weight of the tonearm through the cartridge stylus and onto the vinyl record. It is important to set the proper tracking force in order to maximize the playback performance and to reduce the risk of mistracking or causing excessive record wear.

Check for the manufacturers recommended settings for your stylus tracking force. The Ortofon tracking force gauge tool is a small plastic pivot type scale that will accurately measure tracking force between 1.25 g and 4 g. Not for use on very old record players.

The Ortofon stylus force gauge is simple to use:

1. Very gently, rest the cartridge stylus (needle) into the grooved guide track at the desired tracking force marking.
2. Next, adjust the counter-weight or tonearm pressure dials until the Ortofon pivot scale is in balance. The scale on the force gauge is marked in gram.

Nice stylus force gauge
After a few minutes getting used to it, this gauge is just fine. It is not effortless to use, but it is simple, inexpensive, and the results are reproducible on repeated measurements. It is a cost-effective solution for all but the most fanatical.

Little GEM of a tool
This is worth it's weight in GOLD. Has calibrations for the most common VTF settings. This is the same as the Ortofon scale that was supplied with the 500 Mk II series carts and the original X-MC carts. A MUST-HAVE if you ask me. I like this one better than the fussy SHURE scale...I think you will too!

works as advertised
Took me about 30 seconds to get the tonearm weight adjusted using this gauge... nothing tricky, no worries about dead batteries.

Ortofon stylus force/weight gauge
I had no idea that the stock counterweight markings on my Yamaha YP-211 TT were off...turns out it was off by .25 gram. Now I know it's correct. I think that this unit in addition to the Ortofon alignment protractor is a must-have. Just as effective as more expensive options. The value vs the performance/sound quality improvement is huge.

Simplicity is what I think of with this force gauge overall! The only complaint I would have is lack of instructions (I just looked the info up myself on the internet).

Now I'm a junky like the rest or you . . .save me . . .
I never gave tracking much thought. With this scale now I'm adjusting my many cartridges with precision. I've become one of those guys with a box of cartridge/headshell combos to meet various audio projects. This scale rounds out my 'works', I'm now a true audiophile junky . . where's my ortofon tone arm with a tone arm board of mahogany from the old forrest of Santo Domingo ? I'm ranting . . .lets just say this is very useful and if you are serious you must have one.

nice for the price
Seems nice for the price and easy to use. Weight markings are very visible and being plastic it shouldn't damage your stylus. Will check against a digital scale at some point for accuracy

A serious tool
This stylus force gauge or scale is a simple, inexpensive, cost-effective solution to a very important and necessary adjustment. You can quickly and easily verify or dispute the often incorrect calibration of tone arm settings. It is not fussy or tricky to use and allows adjustment with precision. Although it’s just a piece of plastic, it is very useful and serious tool with ruled graduations.

Useable, but flawed.
Marked stylus placement points are not linear like a ruler - finding desired points between marks is just guessing. And, the arm can bind. Placement grooves across the arm would serve better - it wouldn't matter if the stylus was off center.
