78s

Different stylus sizes for 78 RPM records (like 2.5mil, 3.5mil, 4.0mil, 4.5mil) address varying groove widths from different eras, with larger tips (3.5-4.5 mil) for very early acoustic shellac records (pre-1930s, often played with steel needles) and smaller tips (around 2.5-3.0 mil) for later, more common shellac 78s and electrical recordings, to avoid damaging grooves and ensure good sound quality, with 3.0 mil being a general middle ground.

Why Different Sizes?
  • Wider Grooves: 78 RPM records, especially older ones, have much wider grooves than LPs (33s/45s).
  • Wear & Tear: Early 78s were often played with steel needles, which wore grooves wider and deeper over time.
  • Recording Technology: Groove widths changed with recording technology; acoustic recordings (pre-1925) often had wider grooves than later electrical recordings.
Stylus Size Guide:
  • 2.5 mil (approx.): Common for many standard 78s and electrical recordings.
  • 3.0 mil (approx.): A versatile size for many 78s, a good general-purpose choice.
  • 3.5 mil (approx.): Good for worn 78s, early electricals, or bridging the gap between 3.0 and larger tips.
  • 4.0 mil & 4.5 mil (approx.): Used for very early, pre-WWII acoustic shellac records and broadcast transcriptions with extremely wide grooves.
In Summary: You need a larger stylus (3.5mil+) for older, heavily worn 78s and smaller (2.5-3mil) for more modern, less-worn 78s to accurately track the groove and prevent damage, with 3mil being a popular standard.

Mono LPs

The 1.0 mil (one-thousandth of an inch) conical stylus was the original standard for playing mono LPs (Long Play records) from the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s.

Characteristics and Use of 1.0 mil Styli

  • Original Standard: Mono LPs were designed with narrower grooves (known as "microgrooves," but wider than later stereo grooves) specifically to be tracked by a 1.0 mil conical stylus. This was the prevalent size for virtually all mono LPs made during that era.
  • Groove Compatibility: The 1.0 mil stylus correctly fits within the wider, V-shaped lateral-cut grooves of 1950s mono records, riding high enough in the groove to avoid the potentially unworn or dirty bottom.
  • Sound Quality: Using the correct 1.0 mil stylus as intended by the original mastering engineers often provides superior playback, reducing surface noise and distortion by tracking the optimal, part of the groove wall.
  • Conical Shape: The conical (spherical) shape was the standard at the time, simpler and more alignment-forgiving than later elliptical or advanced profiles.

Transition to 0.7 mil: As stereo records (which use a smaller 0.7 mil stylus) became the dominant format in the 1960s, a de facto standard of 0.7 mil for all microgroove LPs was adopted going forward.
