"D1" = Modern 1.0mil conical diamond stylus for Shure V15 Type III Cartridge.
A 1.0 mil stylus is the historically correct choice for many early mono microgroove LP records, especially those pressed from the introduction of the LP in 1948 through much of the 1950s. Early Columbia and other mono LPs were cut with wider groove dimensions than later stereo records and were originally intended to be played with a 1 mil conical stylus. Using the proper 1 mil tip can offer several advantages on these records. It better matches the original groove geometry, can reduce distortion, and may produce a fuller, more stable mono presentation. Because the larger stylus rides a slightly different area of the groove wall than a modern 0.7 mil stereo stylus, it can also sometimes reduce surface noise and bypass wear caused by decades of playback with smaller styli. A 1 mil stylus is therefore especially useful for collectors of early 33? RPM mono LPs from roughly 1948 through the mid-to-late 1950s, before stereo LPs and the smaller 0.7 mil stylus became the industry standard. It is not a 78 RPM stylus—78s generally require a much larger tip, typically around 2.5 to 3 mil.

Great for records that were not well cared for. Conical tips pickup less "artifacts" such pops and clicks.
NOTE: Because this needle is designed for use specifically with SHURE cartridges, it can be found in numerous brands of turntables. In some cases the cartridges for this needle may be original equipment supplied with a new turntable, but was also likely to have been selected at time of sale to complete a turntable sold without a cartridge or later as an upgrade to the original cartridge supplied by the turntable manufacturer. This needle should be matched primarily to the SHURE cartridge type not necessarily the turntable.
